Dawn French Talks ‘Body Blindness’

Dawn French, the British comedian of ‘French & Saunders’ fame, has spoken out about her body, and what she calls ‘body blindness’.
“I can honestly say that it doesn’t bother me, though I do worry that I’ll get so comfortably fat that I won’t be able to walk any more,” she said in an interview with Woman’s Weekly magazine.
“I think the medical term for my condition is called ‘body blindness’.”
French also spoke about her former attempts to lose weight, such as when she dropped several sizes in the weeks before her wedding to husband Lenny Henry, who she has been married to since the 1980’s. According to her, she starved herself, and took every medication on the market to shrink down to a size 12. She claims that she didn’t want to be a ‘fat bride’. “But Len took me to one side and said, ‘Who are you doing this for? I hope it’s not me because it’s not what I want,’” she recalled fondly.
Many medical professionals have criticized French, as well as others, for what they say is a dangerous message in a time of growing obesity. The epidemic, they say, is likely being fueled by those in the media’s eye that refuse to work at being healthier, and instead make excess fat seem like a non-issue. Doctors worry that it may lead to more ‘fat acceptance’, which could lead to growing numbers of heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions that are related to obesity.
But Dawn French is unconcerned, and happy with her body. So, apparently, is her husband.
“My husband’s Jamaican and comes from a family of big women. For him it’s the norm and thin women are a turn-off.”
