alli-pills-new-diet-programOver the last year Alli has become one of the most popular weight loss drugs on the market, being the first that has been prove effective to be sold over-the-counter. The main ingredient, orlistat, was approved for use by the FDA. But now it looks as if Alli may have some unforeseen risks, after dozens of cases in the US and UK showed consumers being hospitalized with liver damage.

According to the FDA, there have been potentially thousands of cases, but only a few dozen have been verified. Of those cases seven deaths have been reported, two of liver damage, and five of unknown causes. The most common diagnosis has been hepatitis, though other liver problems have been seen. This includes jaundice and toxicity, which is causing alarm in consumers who have been regularly using the product.

But Alli has said that the worries are unfounded, and that Alli had nothing to do with the cases of liver failure reported.

“Alli has been used by millions of consumers in the US. The safety and efficacy profile of orlistat is well documented and has been established through data from more than 100 clinical studies involving more than 30,000 patients worldwide,” and official spokesperson said in a press release.

An investigation into the claims has been launched, which will determine whether or not regulatory action will be taken.
