Spammers Ordered To Pay $3.7 Million In Internet Scam

A group of scam artists that were caught selling diet pills through email were sentenced this week to pay back $3.7 million in compensation by a U.S. District court.
The spam group, called Spear Systems, had individuals from the US, Canada, and Australia working within it. They had all been reported by the FTC in 2007, but the final settlements were only made now, after years of fighting against the spammers.
They worked by sending mass emails to unsuspecting account holders and offering a link to a product. That product, they claimed, was made from hoodia gordonii, a well known appetite suppressant, and a ‘hormone enhancement’ drug, which they said would reduce the signs of aging. All claims were disproved by the court.
