For some people, diet and exercise are not enough to lose weight or they may be so obese that faster weight loss is preferred to reduce further health risks. In cases like this, a doctor will sometimes prescribe a medication that helps lose weight. Bontril tablets are a drug that is often prescribed for a short period to supplement a diet and exercise plan.
Bontril is similar to an amphetamine in action. It is a sympathomimetic amine which stimulates the brain and nerves, increasing heart rate and depressing the appetite. Bontril tablets are mainly only recommended when obesity is the only factor actually present as it can worsen certain conditions.
If your doctor suggests adding Bontril to your diet and exercise plan, be sure to inform him of any other conditions you may have or medications that you may be on. While it can be taken with diabetes, sometimes it is necessary to adjust the diabetic medication or insulin therapy.
Bontril tablets side effects.
Serious side effects can occur by taking Bontril tablets within two weeks of any MAO inhibitors so even if you are not currently taking one, be sure that the doctor is aware of the last time you took such a drug. You cannot take Bontril tablets if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, arteriosclerosis or glaucoma. It is not advised to take this medication if you are pregnant or nursing as studies haven't determined whether the drug will pass through to the unborn child or if it passes through breast milk.
You must be honest with your doctor if you have a history of substance abuse as Bontril can be habit forming both physically and psychologically. Once you have been taking this drug for a few weeks, it may be necessary for you doctor to lower your dosage slowly in order to prevent symptoms of withdrawal and depression.
Because Bontril tablets are stimulant medication, it is best to take it in the morning in order to avoid being unable to sleep at night. It can cause dizziness or blurred vision so use caution before driving or doing any hazardous activities until you see how the medication will affect you.
