A good diet plan in 3 simple questions.
Why do you eat? Since we all have to eat to live, this question sounds kind of stupid but just think about it for a minute. What about the bag of chips you ate mindlessly because you were bored last week?
Or the chocolate bar that made you feel so much better when you were feeling low the other day? There are many emotional triggers to eating that you need to identify and plan for in order to not have constant battles.
Sometimes a food craving can be triggered by subliminal factors, as well. The supermarket is one of those places that cravings can sabotage your diet plan if you aren't vigilant. The best thing you can do is to always eat before you go shopping so you aren't the least bit hungry while you're walking through all the tempting food choices. You will find it much easier to stick to just the healthy items on your list this way.
How do you eat? It takes your brain twenty minutes before it realizes that the stomach is full. If you eat too fast, your stomach gets full before your brain has a chance to register the fact. You will end up overeating and not realize it until it's too late. Slow down and savor your food. Enjoy the tastes and textures of each bite.
People often have the misconception that diet food must be bland and boring – nothing could be further from the truth. Spices and seasonings do not add either fat or calories and can really perk up your tastebuds. Add variety with color and texture to keep your meal from becoming ho-hum. Chop up an apple to top your salad or serve celery sticks with your entree.
When do you eat? If you are skipping meals or going long periods between meals, you could be shooting yourself in the foot right off the bat. Your body is designed to be processing food all the time.
While this is happening, your body will burn calories as well as turn the nutrients into the types of cells needed by the body.
When the body is on empty because you haven't eaten, rather than burn fat stores it will actually slow down the metabolism in order to burn calories as slowly as possible.
Most dieticians will recommend that you eat 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day, rather than 3 big meals only. Not only does it keep your body burning calories at a steady rate, it also has the effect of keeping you from being hungry. If you are not hungry, you won't be tempted to eat the foods that you shouldn't be indulging in.
Keep these three questions in mind when you plan your diet and implement your diet goals and your chances of success improve dramatically. Know and pay attention to why you eat, how you eat and when you eat – you'll be at your ideal weight before you know it!
